The Brain Busters (Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard) vs. The Rockers (Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels) - WWF 23/01/1989
Hot start to the match with The Rockers completely overwhelming The Brain Busters, to the point of them having to bail out of the ring and reg-group. Now that’s how to start a match as well as showcase your hot new (ish) tag team. One thing I’m a sucker for is an extending spot where the face is working over the heel in a hold rather than the other way around. It’s so much fun seeing the heel, being Tully in this case, try and squirm their way out through any method. Especially ones who are as hated as Tully. There is some really great tag sequences in the match too. They are able to blend the systematic approach that The Brain Busters have with the quickness and chemistry of The Rockers. The Brain Busters do a superb job of bumping around and selling all over the place, being incapable of having any sustained offence on The Rockers until they resort to cheating. Once The Brain Busters do gain control, they cut off the ring and work over Michaels really well. They use the ropes to their advantage really well too. Michaels gets the crowd on his side but he does fail to totally grab me in the way that he should. Not quite as sympathetic as 18/03/89 match is between the two teams. The hot tag is awesome though - Jannetty’s bread and butter. The finish was good in theory and makes sense but the way it’s done doesn’t come across well. Great match though. ****1/4
The Brain Busters (Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard) vs. The Rockers (Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels) - WWF 11/03/1989
The Brain Busters starting the match by attacking The Rockers and looking for a quick win was great. So smart and clever. It’s even better when it goes against them with The Rockers then taking control. The match has a much different feel to their other matches which are your basic “work over someone and comeback” matches. This match has a big sprint feel with tons of urgency and quick fire sequences in the early portions of the match. Michaels takes a rather nasty bump after Heenan pull down the ropes, causing him to fall to the outside HARD. That leads to Hennan being sent backstage which is a great moment that gets a big response from the crowd. Jannetty totally shows his worth when he is fighting off the constant double teaming from The Brain Busters. His movement to try and gain some distance (and his wild punches) are great little touches he adds. The finish is fine and adds to the feud perfectly well. Another great edition to the feud. ****1/4
The Rockers (Marty Jannetty & Shawn Michaels) vs The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers (Jacques & Raymond Rougeau) - WWF 13/10/1989
Only three days from their London classic which is a must see for anyone. The Rougeaus are perfect as the chicken shit heel team that is hateable, Jacques especially, and they do just that for the Paris crowd. The Rockers however lack that usual energy that they usually have. And I wasn’t all that interested in The Rougeau’s beat-down of Michaels either. The Rougeaus were too one note in their offence, with them doing nothing, but a long front face lock spot. It lacked the creativity of their last match. It was very uncompelling to watch outside of The Rougeaus strutting and posing and getting heat from the crowd. Pretty disappointing. **1/2
