WWE Great American Bash 2007

WWE United States Title Match - Montel Vontavious Porter (c) vs. Matt Hardy
MVP is still United States champion. I don’t remember what he did last month at Vengeance. Matt Hardy however has been fantastic all year. Arguably the best wrestler of 2007 other than Cena and Umaga. Great matches with the Hardy Boyz as well as some good tv stuff here and there. MVP does some usual stalling but Hardy hits a lovely pescado, putting an end to that. There is a nice back and forth tempo in the match with constant switches of momentum, one of which involved MVP pulling Hardy off the middle rope, bouncing his head off the mat. Nasty bump. Hardy sold it well, especially in his punches which seemed desperate - almost all or nothing-esc due to the effect of the bump. The crowd really gets behind Hardy in the match and cheer up any little sign of momentum that he has and chant “Hardy” throughout. What I dug was whenever Hardy hit one of his big moves, he sold his head, causing him not being able to properly capitalize. The finish plays into the head injury but MV did the worst version of one of the worst finishers ever so I can’t say it was good lol. Very good match. Hardy ruled all match with his excellent selling and helped MVP to a really good match. ***3/4

WWE Cruiserweight Title Match - Chavo Guerrero (c) vs. Funaki vs. Hornswoggle vs. Jamie Noble vs. Jimmy Wang Yang vs. Shannon Moore
Moves happened. Hornswoggle won. R.I.P the Cruiserweights. **

Singapore Cane On A Pole Match - Carlito vs. The Sandman

WWE Women's Title Match - Candice Michelle (c) vs. Melina
And no

Intercontinental Title Match -Umaga (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
Umaga finally away from Santino Marella and Vince! Umaga ragdolling Hardy sounds like a recipe for huge success to me as Umaga is excellent as a monster. He knows how to use his size and speed to his advantage as well as how to get the best out of his opponent. Umaga uses the most basic moves early on, including an Irish Whip and makes it look so great. Hardy’s willingness to go all in on that stuff certainly helps. Jerry offers some excellent commentary in the match too, explaining why the Nerve grip that Umaga does is so effective which is simple yet great insight. Jeff is so good when being killed by someone. He sells Umaga’s offence well, bumps his butt off and is incredibly sympathetic which creates tons of heat for the match. Another thing that’s good about the match is how most of Hardy’s offence comes from Umaga’s mistakes. Whether it’s taking too much time to do something or a missed move, Hardy capitalised as it’s the only way you can beat him. The near fall with the missed corner splash into a swanton bomb was excellent. The crowd and I totally bought it. Hardy sold the impact of his landing just enough to allow Umaga enough time to recuperate and stay alive. The way it lead to the finish was good too. Overall, this was a great match. Hardy is in his eliminate as the defensive wrestler and Umaga does an Umaga. ****1/4

ECW World Heavyweight Title Match - Johnny Nitro (c) vs. CM Punk
Decent match. Both guys kicked the heck out of each other and there was a nice pace to the match. ***

Texas Bullrope Match - Dusty Rhodes vs. Randy Orton
Oh dear, Dusty wrestling in 2007. This can’t be good. Orton reverting back to the legend killer gimmick too! Well, considering this feud is built around Orton not having any respect, he bumps his arse off for Dusty slow offence early on. There is a long headlock spot then the finish after the start, so short match, thankfully. *3/4

World Heavyweight Title Triple Threat Match - The Great Khali (w/Ranjin Singh) (c) vs. Batista vs. Kane
This looked absolutely awful on paper. Younger Kane, I can deal with but 2007 Kane, no. I don’t rate Batista and Khali, well, Cena made him look good but lol. However they made it work. Loved the double teaming on Khali. The crowd was really into it and it made perfect sense. There was a ton of fun spots in this, surprisingly. ***

WWE Heavyweight Title Match - John Cena (c) vs. Bobby Lashley
Considering how much Lashley was pushed before he left, it wouldn’t surprise me if this was supposed to be the start of a big Cena/Lashley feud, something in the vain of Cena/Orton. The start of the match was pretty wicked. Bth men colliding in a elbow tie-up with Lashley out strengthening Cena and uses his amatur skils to get one up on the Champ. Lashley puts on a display of some awesome powermoves, throwing Cena around with ease. Cena bumps excellent for them too. The story of the match is Lashley dominates Cena with his power and wrestling skill and Cena has to try and find a way to get a way around that, and they do it so well. Lashley looks so great by the simple reason that he doesn’t tap for the STFU like almost every challenger before him. The finish was great with one of the first appearances of the FU off the top. Great match. ****

Damn, this was a really up and down show. Some of the matches were fantastic clinics of wrestling. The main event was awesome, you had an awesome MOTYC in Umaga vs Hardy. A great opener. Some of the most important parts of the show. But there are some awful lows. We got the death of the Cruiserweight title, too. Best To Worst: Umaga vs Jeff Hardy - [****1/4]. John Cena vs Bobby Lashley - [****]. Montel Vontavious Porter vs. Matt Hardy - [***3/4]. The Great Khali vs. Batista vs. Kane - [***]. Johnny Nitro (c) vs. CM Punk - [***].
