NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29 - Day One (06/07/2019)

Roppongi 3K (SHO & YOH) vs. Guerrillas of Destiny (Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa)
A solid opener. Pretty much the standard HW vs JW tag match. **

Tomohiro Ishii & Shota Umino vs. Jeff Cobb & Ren Narita
A fun match with tons of strikes and throws. The Young Lions looked great. ***

CHAOS (Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI) vs. Bullet Club (Jay White & Chase Owens)
Up and down match. The best bits were obviously Goto vs White. **3/4

Toru Yano, Juice Robinson & Jushin Thunder Liger vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi & BUSHI)
Another fun tag match on the undercard. Liger and Yano being the most over makes me smile. ***

Will Ospreay vs. Lance Archer
Well, both guys had their working boots on, Archer especially. They clearly went out there and went balls to the walls with some crazy stuff. Table bumps, crazy moves off the top rope, a very impressive rope walk by Archer. Very good and enjoyable match. The 20 count tease was excellent. The match slightly missed its peak a little though but nothing was hurt. ***1/2

EVIL vs. Bad Luck Fale
This match is exactly what you expect from Fale. Take that as you will. **

SANADA vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
I did think this lacked the focus of the last two matches that these guys had each other - both great matches - but I still enjoyed this a ton. Both guys had some great counters for each other with a nice back and forth pace. The momentum constantly shifty kept me on my toes as far as concentrating lol. The finish was awesome. ***1/2

Kota Ibushi vs. KENTA
KENTA vs Ibushi delivered on all that it was promising, even with an injury that could’ve easily blown the match entirely but they worked around it pretty well and salvaged it. Although it was pretty iffy at times and it lost the crowd. The rest was great though. The strikes at the beginning, all which sounded pretty damn gross, even on TV. And the finish was pretty great - a nice increase of pace, urgency and intensity by KENTA. Ibushi’s selling I thought was pretty great throughout. ***3/4

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada
Like the rest of the show, this was very much a greatest hits match. Of course, the greatest hits and fucking great. Although I did love the added addition of the dragon screw battle, which sort of reminded me of Tanahashi vs Mutoh’s Dome match. The selling was inconsistent as fuck though, but that comes with the terriotory with Tana and Okada matches. Only gripe that I had with the match. Great main event to end the show and with the crowd going nuts for it, it was well deserved too. ****
