AJPW Super Power Series 1993

Holy Demon Army (Akira Taue & Toshiaki Kawada) vs. Super Generation Army (Kenta Kobashi & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi) - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 1 14/05/1993
The first ever teaming of these two under the Holy Demon Army! The start of what is perhaps the greatest tag team of all time. How exciting. Really good outing for the Holy Demon Army. Taue and Kawada dominated Kikuchi for the most part with Kikuchi and Kobashi fighting from beneath with tons of heart. ***1/2

AJPW World Tag Team Title Match: Miracle Violence Connection (Steve Williams & Terry Gordy) (c) vs. Holy Demon Army (Akira Taue & Toshiaki Kawada) - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 6 20/05/1993
This had the flaws of a Miracle Violence Connection tag match as well as the pulses. The match had a low volume crowd when the MVC were in control whether it was them locking on submission holds or hitting big clubbing blows, the crowd didn’t seem hooked into their offence. I was a little as they upped the tempo of some of their offence and worked over Kawada rather well, using their size to their advantage. Taue and Kawada made some decent comebacks that seemed to spark the crowd. Ultimately, this was a disappointing but significant match. **3/4

Kenta Kobashi vs. Terry Gordy - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 7 21/05/1993
KOBASHI BEATS GORDY!!!!!! Kobashi puts in a hell of an underdog display against the incredibly strong Terry Gordy, former Triple Crown Champion. The crowd bit on Kobashi’s comebacks so hard and popped for any hope of a win for him. The nearfalls were built really well. The initial moonsault nearfall was excellent and Kobashi eventually hitting another one for the win was cathartic. Gordy put in a good effort in return. One of the better All Japan matches that I’ve seen from Gordy. He hit super hard, cut off Kobashi extremely well and was just solid all around. ***3/4

Triple Crown Title Match: Mitsuharu Misawa (c) vs. Stan Hansen - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 7 21/05/1993
Hansen beats Misawa in the Carny Final. Hansen gets a title shot. Can Hansen beat Misawa again? Or Will Misawa overcome Hansen to retain the title? Hansen pouncing during the ring announcements was so Hansen. Him stalking Misawa in the middle of the ring and rushing at the first opportunity. Hansen attacks the arm of Misawa, a tool that proved useful in the Carny Finals. Misawa’s comebacks were very sparky. Very quick and hot before Hansen cut him off. A good build to the elbow finish, the same move that won Misawa the title. I think the quality was a little too uneven. The peaks were enthralling but I couldn’t for the life of me find this interesting for its entirety. ***1/2

AJPW World Tag Team Title Match: Holy Demon Army (Akira Taue & Toshiaki Kawada) (c) vs. Super Generation Army (Kenta Kobashi & Mitsuharu Misawa) - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 15 01/06/1993
This was excellent. It’s been a while since Taue got chants from the crowd but here he was, getting them. The crowd is all behind Holy Demon Taue! The Kawada vs Misawa exchanges were so great. The brief counter sequence before a flurry of elbows and nasty slaps from both and then ending it with Misawa getting the better of Kawada via the facelock. Kobashi steps up big time as well. He lays in the chops and kicks to the face. He had some great nearfalls with the moonsault and the powerbomb into the jackknife pin combo. The closing stretch went on a little too long for me but it ended effectively regardless. For a first time iteration of this match, this was amazing. ****1/4

Holy Demon Army (Akira Taue, Toshiaki Kawada & Yoshinari Ogawa) vs. Super Generation Army (Kenta Kobashi, Mitsuharu Misawa & Tsuyoshi Kikuchi) - AJPW Super Power Series 1993 - Day 17 03/06/1993
Kawada turned into a belligerent bastard in this one. He is brutal with his offence. He and Misawa were heated up in a big way as well. Kikuchi and Ogawa getting the shine in the finishing sequence was good. A few good counters that the crowd bit for. Kobashi was good as usual. Good match. ***3/4
