Santito Turns Rudo! Casas/Santo/Dandy! Blood, Guts, Apuestas

Hijo del Santo & Scorpio Jr & Bestia Salvaje vs Negro Casas & El Dandy & Hector Garza - CMLL Super Viernes 22/11/1996
Holy cow. Santo’s heel turn looks better in execution than on paper. He comes out dressed up in a cape, he kind of looks like El Felino. He waits and then attacks Casas, dropping the cape and revealing himself - to the shock of the world. He mauls Casas for two straight falls, it was a torture session with the only tools being violent punches and kicks. He’s dismissive of the others as well, leaving them to Salvaje and Scorpio Jr. I liked how Garza couldn’t comprehend what Santo was doing, trying to talk Santo out of it before giving up by the third fall and preventing Santo from running away when Casas recovered and kicked the hell out of him. The heat was tremendous too. The crowd throwing drinks and food at Santo was a great visual and he played it up perfectly. An excellent match with violent wrestling, great rudo performances from the rudo side and selling from Casas. ****1/4

Hijo del Santo & Scorpio Jr & Bestia Salvaje vs Negro Casas & El Dandy & Hector Garza - CMLL Super Viernes 29/11/1996
Santo totally ate shit in this match with Casas ripping off the mask at the end and stomping on his head. The match is focused on incorporating El Dandy into the mix with him being a part of the 3-way next month. He and Santo go at it hard. Santo is aggressive but Dandy is staying with him. Garza took some crazy bumps but that botched shooting star to the outside was frightening. He somehow made it work still and nailed the Rudo team falling backwards. Awesome match. ****

Three Way Mask Vs. Hair Match: Hijo del Santo vs. El Dandy vs. Negro Casas - CMLL Super Viernes 06/12/1996
The rules are a little complex but from what I understand, there are two parts to this match. The first part is an elimination 3-way where the two wrestlers eliminated will have to put their hair or mask up as a wager in the second part of the match which will be an apuestas. The winner of the first part then leaves the match. The second part, as I’ve already stated, is an apuestas match which will be under the classic 2/3 falls rules CMLL adheres to. I liked the first part of the match with Dandy and Casas ignoring each other and attacking Santo and eliminating him quickly so he’d have to wager his mask. Cool storytelling. A good serviceable start to the match. The Casas/Dandy stuff is short though. Negro Casas not having to be in the second part is sad but they are saving that encounter for the Aniversario show next year. Dandy vs Santo is magic though. Santo’s mask gets covered in his and Dandy’s blood. So it’s a mixture of red and brown. It’s disgusting and I love it. The match is an awesome brawl with the added layer of Santo and Dandy attacking each other by the limbs, the masks, the hair. The selling by both is sublime. Dandy’s knee is destroyed via Santo’s excellent maestro skills. The surfboard looked painful for the 1st fall finish, too. Dandy had some great comebacks that were made even greater via tremendous build. Santo cut him off just as he was getting going, making you want it more and more. The crowd was all into this match although the fans were on the recently turned ruod, Hijo del Santo’s side and not the face, El Dandy. It’s not surprising though considering Arena Mexico’s tendency to cheer the rudos (ironically booing Santo for years before he finally turned). Santo took to being a rudo superbly well. Dandy being fantastic only helped that. ****1/2
