MSW Mid-South Wrestling TV #279 12/01/1985

Wow I’m actually watching a second week of this show. Normally I forget or give up because weekly tv projects need commitment and I’m not about that.

Dr Death gets interviewed by Jim Ross and he cuts a stumbling promo about how he doesn’t need his football helmet to win his matches and he’ll prove it tonight against Brad Armstrong.

Terry Daniels & Tim Horner vs. Dale Veasey & Rip Oliver

I learned something new about my boy Terry Daniels this week, that he was a Private. Awesome. USA! USA! Horner and Daniels are practically with her arm-drag heavy offence while Rip Oliver and Dale Veasey are more unsavoury with hairpulls and illegal strikes to the face. The heels get some heat on Terry Daniels before Daniels gets the tag after a suplex. Horner has a neat hot tog before tagging Daniels back in to get the submission win over Veasey via a cobra clutch. A fine opening tag match to showcase the lower ranked wrestlers. **

We cut to a house show event where Bill Watts is in the ring and is giving ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan an award for the 1984 Athlete Of the Year much to the delight of the crowd. Duggan got gold cufflinks for his efforts. And the cufflinks are a perfect present to make Duggan to wear a Tuxedo suit  - recommended by Duggan’s mother of all people lol. As well as that, Bill Dundee came out and congratulated Joel, the son of Bill Watts on his 21st Birthday. How nice. This transitioned into a Dibiase promo. Dibiase is disgusted at Duggan win. He calls him out for looking like a bum (my words), calling himself class.

Mid-South Television Title Match: Terry Taylor (c) vs. Hercules Hernandez

Terry Taylor defends against Hercules Hernandez which is weird since the challenger lost last week. This is mostly an angle though. Hercules gots the advantage with hammerlocks but Taylor was quickly able to out manoeuvre him and almost beat him with an O’Connor roll before he attacked Buddy Landell who interfered. The heels attack Taylor before Iceman Parsons makes the save! *1/2

Jack Victory/Buddy Landel vs. Iceman Parsons

ECW Legend, Jack Victory is here! Great… This is a pure squash match for Parsons for Jack Victory pinballing himself around the ring for Parsons punches before Parsons puts him away with a botched axe handle to the stomach. Landel comes out to the ring to want a match with Parsons, stemming from the prior match. Parsons starts off hot with flashy punches and a big back body drop. Parsons puts Landel to sleep with a clothesline off the top rope. Landel didn’t stand a chance. Iceman Parsons looks strong again going through two squash matches.

Jake Roberts vs. Mike Jackson

This is another squash match but unlike Rocky King from last week, Mike Jackson is more stubborn and willing to put up a fight against Roberts. Roberts was really awesome in the match with his work on the ribs. His knees to the stomach looked brutal and snug. I love how he cenerted all his offence around the ribs. Jackson sells it super well too. The DDT finishes it off to cap off a fun extended squash..

Two On One Handicap Match: Kamala vs. George South & Rocky King

This was a standard squash. Kamala steamrolled two people at once and pinned them with the splash. Not much to cover.

Mid-South North American Title Match: Brad Armstrong (c) vs. Steve Williams

Our main event of the evening! Williams is looking to prove his prowess as a wrestler and does just that with his attack on the arm. He wears down Armstrong with a long shoulder hold and a few clubbing blows, cutting off Armstrong’s attempts at escaping the hold. It’s pretty boring work - it doesn’t get much better in his career either - but Armstrong milks it for what its worth. I dug his elbow shots while stuck in the hold but he gets cut off soon after. Armstrong looks to make a quick comeback but curfew cuts the match short. BOOOOOOO

This was a week for building feuds and wrestlers. I love the promo from Dibiase setting up their eventual Tuxedo match. The main event was basic and underwhelming but it still had some spark. Not a great episode overall but oh well.
