Kiyoshi Tamura vs. Hiromitsu Kanehara - RINGS Rise I 22/03/1999

Clearly the new style for RINGS in this era before deciding to go full MMA is to make it look even more legit. They took a very pure approach; oddly minimalistic, if you can say that for a shoot-style bout. Dave Meltzer had a theory that Kanehara was instructed to lay back the strikes to save Tamura for Frank Shamrock on the event which kinda makes sense as there weren't many strikes outside of a few mean knees to the body. Tamura didn't look like he was in trouble on the defensive but Kanehara made him work for the victory for sure. And once Tamura started setting up submission transitions, the points Kanehara lost started to rack up until the cross arm-breaker finish. Others would think this was boring but I found the approach to be refreshing and compelling as a result. It felt like a shoot at times which was the aim. ****
