NJPW G1 Climax 1994 - Day 1 03/08/1994

G1 Climax 1994 Block B Match: Shiro Koshinaka vs. Takayuki Iizuka
The match was pretty good. Iizuka busted out a few nice drop kicks and suplexes. Koshinaka had some kicks but was mostly on the defensive. One point of the match, Iizuka locked in a legbar for around 3 minutes and the crowd really responded to it and Koshinaka sold the pain excellent during the hold. But then once out of the hold, he basically no sold it and won the match. I felt the comeback at the end was a bit rushed but the rest of the match was really solid.  ***

G1 Climax 1994 Block B Match: Tatsumi Fujinami vs. Power Warrior
Power Warrior aka Kensuke Sasaki is one half of the IWGP Tag Team champion with Road Warrior Hawk so he is still in his Hellraisers gimmick but is starting to show promise as a singles competitor and looks pretty great here against Tatsumi Fujinami. He throws Fujinami all over the place with power moves and hard blows, almost tapping him out with the “Stranglehold” submission. But after one scoop slam too many, rolls him up with a backslide for the win. Another short match that lasted for 5 minutes but this was an awesome sprint. Fujinami did a great job of putting over Power Warrior’s moves and Power Warrior looked like a beast despite the quick loss. ***1/2

G1 Climax 1994 Block A Match: Keiji Muto vs. Yoshiaki Fujiwara
Very intriguing match on paper, Muto is a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and is no an established main eventer, Fujiwara is a 22 year veteran at this point (Yeah, 22 years), the first graduate out of the New Japan dojo and looking to prove he can still go with the best. Fujiwara is a highly acclaimed grappler but Muto surprisingly one ups him in the early going and goes toe to toe with Fujiwara throughout the match. Fujiwara constantly fights to get the advantage. Muto gets too confident though and gets caught with an awesome counter by Fujiwara with an armbar after Muto goes for running back elbow and has to tap out. This was really fun and had a crazy ending. ***1/2

G1 Climax 1994 Block A Match: Masahiro Chono vs. Riki Choshu
Another short match but it honestly didn’t feel that way. That’s not a bad thing in this case, they started going 50/50 on each other, trying to get the quick win. Chono attempted to lock in his STF submission before Choshu quickly scrambled towards the ropes. The match ended after Choshu caught Chono on the top rope and hit a supersplex and running lariat for the quick win over Mr G1 to a big shock. Some of these quick matches can feel unfulfilled at times but not this, this was an excellently done short match. ***1/2
