Genichiro Tenryu vs Stan Hansen, Jumbo Tsuruta vs Bruiser Brody, Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Genichiro Tenryu

PWF Heavyweight Title / NWA United National Title Match: Genichiro Tenryu (c) vs. Stan Hansen - AJPW Champion Carnival 1988 Day 2 27/03/1988
It’s needless to say that this was pretty stiff. Immediately, they go at each other and throw punches, Hansen mostly. Tenryu gives him them right back but Hansen’s too tough and powers through. Tenryu eventually had to go into a different course which would be working his arm. But this is more about him getting a better opening to target the ribs and weaken Hansen’s gas tank. In all the process, Tenryu’s eye got cut and Hanen pounced like only he could, punching it any chance he was given. Tenryu continues the attack on the side while Hansen tries to break his face. The inish is typical but a DQ inish sums up Hansen perfectly, as he goes crazy, pushing Joe Higuchi to the floor before attacking Tenryu’s eye in the ring corner. ****1/2

NWA International Heavyweight Title Match: Jumbo Tsuruta (c) vs. Bruiser Brody - AJPW Champion Carnival 1988 Day 2 27/03/1988
An oddly minimalist but dull match. The match is mostly built around headlocks and other basic holds, occasionally escalating to more violent spots before returning to its normal style. Ambitious match that just didn’t engage my tastes whatsoever. **1/2

Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Genichiro Tenryu - AJPW October Giant Series 1988 Day 19 - 28/10/1988
This was full of fire and fury. Tenryu really knows who to piss Tsuruta off to the point that Tsuruta kicks the heck outta him. Tenryu throws some niggling kicks and punches that won’t hurt anyone too much but inflicted annoying pains that are hard to really describe. You know them when you feel them. Great brawling mixed in with great technical wrestling as well with Tenryu attacking Tsuruta’s leg withTsuruta replying with some solid work himself. But of course, the violence took precedence aoe everything, even the rules, leading to a double dq. ****1/2
