G1 Climax 2021 Day 2 & 3 (Tanahashi vs Okada, Ishii vs Ibushi, Takagi vs ZSJ)

NJPW G1 Climax 2021 - Day 2 - 19/09/2021

G1 Climax 2021 Block B Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada
I think even when compared to the G1 matches between these two, this would be classed as one of the weaker additions. Nevertheless these two can have this match in their sleep. The build of the match wasn't anything particularly special but it was rock solid and the closing sequences were pretty exciting, getting the crowd amped up in ways that you can't always get with a clap crowd. ***1/2

NJPW G1 Climax 2021 - Day 3 - 23/09/2021

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Kota Ibushi
Ibushi looked much better in this than he did against Tanahashi. This was a more physical match with more striking which suits Ibushi a ton. Plus it limited the garbage Ishii matches can have, allowing for all the better aspects of Ishii. ***1/4

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match: Shingo Takagi vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
This is one of those matches that was obviously going to be great but would fall through the cracks when it comes to listing potentially great matches. Of course these two would be perfect opponents for each other - Shingo’s explosive power against ZSJ’s knack for counters and technical prowess. The obvious target was the arm, and there were plenty of great sequences around Zack capturing the arm of Shingo. Sometimes I wish Shingo would react more to the work by using the arm less but they decided against that, and it was his undoing in the story of the match. The nearfalls and submission attempts at the end were all great. I thought they really helped the drama of the match and allowed for ZSJ’s win to be earned rather than shocking. Shingo instantly tapping once ZSJ found a submission that sufficiently put Shingo in pain was perfect from him, despite my complaints about his constant use of it. ****
