Copa Junior 2022 Final Match: Mistico vs. Atlantis Jr. - CMLL Super Viernes 2022 - 27/05/2022
I thought this was a tremendous piece of work. A great match in true lucha libre form - the Arena Mexico crowd was so hot and rabid for the wrestling, Atlantis Jr, who’s grown into his position on the card, strutted around the ring, playing the crowd like a fiddle while bumping and selling excellently to match Mistico’s flash, energy and charisma. Mistico isn’t everyone’s favourite luchador, but this was a real return to his peak form. If he’s like this regular, I’ll be sure to watch him more. The match felt exciting and peaked many times throughout the match, being able to keep the pace instead of packing it in all at the end. The match began with a snug lock-up followed up by some neat exchanges that weren’t fluid but Atlantis Jr was quick on his feet to throw Mistico into the barricade when a headscissors on the floor fell short. They were able to build to the high spots well enough. The dives from Mistico and Atanatis Jr were spectacular and had the crowd rocking. But the best spot of the match, for me, was Atlantis Jr knocking Mistico’s lights out in the crowd before Mistico stood up, staggering, but defiant which I went nuts at. Not mentioning Mistico diving into the fans laps when Atlantis Jr tried to stall for a time out. Single fall bouts aren’t always the best but this was pretty great. ****1/4
