Mistico vs. Stuka Jr - CMLL Martes De Arena Mexico - 24/01/2023
The first round started off great with a quick exchange before Stuka took control and capitalised on Mistico’s failed dive to win the first fall. The second fall was more of the same from Stuka, except he began ripping the mask off Mistico, who is still selling from diving into the barricade. Mistico is strong in this vulnerable state though. He’s a maverick when he gets going but he can sell so well. And he compliments Stuka Jr wonderfully. Of course, he scored an upset pin after a series of great looking moves because we need a third fall and if it was anything like the second fall, the crowd is in for a treat. The third fall starts on the ramp where Mistico teases a dive into the ring, which Stuka prevents. Stuka takes control once more and goes for the new mask (Mistico changed it because it was so ripped) but Mistico prevents that and hits a spectacular corkscrew plancha to the floor, followed up by a corner tope. The fall isn’t a total Mistico showcase, however. Stuka Jr gets more than enough offence in himself, including an asai moonsault to Mistico, who just slid to the floor after a failed baseball slide attempt! The closing stretch had a very compelling back and forth battle. Mistico would have his chance to finish the match, Stuka Jr would then have his chance. Both would counter the over at the seemingly perfect time, all while keeping the dramatic nearfalls relatively low-key for an Arena Mexico main event. Mistico wins with La Mistica to the cheer from the crowd. The Tuesday’s shows are usually skippable but they can produce sneakily good matches and this is a whopper. Stuka Jr was fantastic in his rudo persona in this match. He worked as a rudo should - full of disrespect and aggression. The cameras showed the tourists having a hell of a good time booing him and he earned those boos. He was a nasty fella. I thought this was super awesome and one of the better matches of the year. ****
