Rush vs Bryan Danielson - AEW Dynamite 2023

#1 Contender Match: Bryan Danielson vs Rush - AEW Dynamite #175 - Championship Fight Night - 08/02/2023
The sound of the match sounds pretty damn good and this got tons of praise. I don’t usually believe a word the inmates say about AEW but I can see this being awesome. The match is preceded by MJF, Bryan’s opponent at the upcoming PPV AEW Revolution 2023 (but this isn’t confirmed at the time of the match) cutting a promo, drawing heat from the spanish speaking crowd, claiming he doesn’t speak spanish, which is a great bit and orders Aubrey the ref to count a missing Bryan out. It is revealed that Bryan has been locked into a private dressing room by presumably D-Generation X, as this is late 1999-2000s WWF, apparently. Bryan is able to escape and sprints to the ring to start the match.

Rush attacks with stomps and chops before bowing to the crowd. Bryan starts to hulk up, for some reason but Rush hits some kicks to the injured shoulder. Bryan still continues to shake his fists before exchanging chops and headbutts with Rush. Rush mauls Bryan on the outside in his typical fashion, launching Bryan into the barricade and smacking Bryan with a dropkick, and Bryan is left cut open. The ref tries to bring the wrestling back into the ring but Rush rolls back out and does more of the same. I love it. A heel with no regard for the rules only works when there are rules to oblige by. Bryan’s attempts at coming back are cut off with a belly to bell off the apron. Rush works the crowd and beats on Bryan more, this time escalating by trying to use a chair, which is prevented. Bryan is then given time to sell the damage, which is somethin he is great at, especially with a bloody face. Bryan, out of nowhere, sweeps the leg and tries for the LeBell lock and when that fails, hits an awesome dive to the floor. And throws Rush into the barricades. Straight out of an Arena Mexico main event, with blood as the exception. Bryan does some shitty kicks but the crowd chants “Si!” which is kind of cool, Bryan throws chops instead which are a little better but Rush is stronger and gets Bryan into the corner and goes for his dropkick only for Bryan to catch him off guard but Rush, who has received very little damage the whole match, is able to get control almost right back. Rush hits a piledriver and Bryan gets the Busaiku Knee and neither do the job. More headbutts followed by a second Busaiku Knee are enough to end the match. A great match for Rush fans as this is all his schtick with it being sold with the proper weight it deserves to be most effective. ****
