NJPW Castle Attack 2021
Tomohiro Ishii vs. Jay White - NJPW Castle Attack - Day 1 27/02/2021
It was the same old story with these two - White is the chicken and Ishii is all business - but I can't say that they did it poorly. It was a really good rendition of their match. There was a great spot where Ishii did a vile upwards headbutt to White while he was perched on the top turnbuckle and that caused White to fall and trap his foot. Good match. ***1/2
IWGP Intercontinental Title Match: Kota Ibushi (c) vs. Tetsuya Naito - NJPW Castle Attack - Day 2 - 28/02/2021
Ibushi keeps up his form in the big title matches but I have to say that I thought Naito was the standout wrestler. I think he did some excellent work on the leg from start to finish. And while it didn't plan out for Naito, as Ibushi was able to overcome it with his sheer insistence to fight through pain and injury, it created some great drama. The match was a little long which prevented it from being a low key MOTYC but that's a small flaw. ***3/4
DDT Effort, Friendship And Victory In Nagoya 2021 - 23/02/2021
KO-D Tag Team Title Match: Eruption (Kazusada Higuchi & Yukio Sakaguchi) (c) vs. Konosuke Takeshita & MAO
I thought this was excellent. The rating on cagematch raised a few eyebrows, but I'm in no way disappointed with the outcome. Whether it was Higuchi pairing off with MAO or Eruption’s incredible teamwork, this was purely quality. MAO sold for Higuchi’s back based attacks really well, bumping around while using his charisma to shine as an underdog. Sakaguchi was the right partner to compliment Higuchi’s work too. Even outside of the wrestling itself, Sakaguchi made Higuchi step on the gas even more with a few words and a slap. And that he did - just when the match seemed to be peaking, Takeshita and Higuchi match up and ramp up the intensity ever so more with an outstanding, bombastic closing stretch that saw Higuchi pick up the win after plenty of hard suplexes and throws. ****1/4
